Teachers Kick Off Sit Down Strike Over Salary Increments
By Uganda Online Media
Kampala: Teachers under their umbrella body, Uganda National Teachers Union-UNATU have announced a sit-down strike that kicks off today demanding salary increment.
According to UNATU general secretary Filbert Baguma, they are aggrieved by the discriminatory salary enhancements following the national budget reading on Tuesday, that saw Shs. 495 billion allocations for enhancement of salaries of medical workers, scientists, and science teachers.
UNATU leaders have now called on all teachers to stay away from schools and to mobilize their colleagues not to step into classrooms until their salaries have been enhanced just like their science colleagues have had their increased.
“Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) informs all members in every school and education institution that the industrial action against discriminatory salary enhancements begins on Wednesday, June 15th, 2022,” reads part of the statement from UNATU.
“Stay Home and Mobilize others to act. All teachers matter and therefore deserve an increment.” the statement added.
In his budget speech read on Tuesday, Finance Minister Kasaija announced that the salaries of science teachers, scientists and health workers will be increased in a ‘very big’ way starting July 2022.
