Luweero Christians Vow To Take Court Action Against Archbishop Kaziimba Mugalu

A section of Christians from Luweero Diocese has filed a notice of intention to sue the Province of the Church of Uganda administration for alleged mishandling of the 4th bishop election process.

In a letter addressed to the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda,  Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, Seven Anglicans attached to the Diocese of Luweero are seeking to stay the resolutions of the House of Bishops that revoked the election of Rev Can Godfrey Kasana as 4th bishop of Luweero Diocese.

David Lule Mutyaba, one of the seven Anglicans and congregants at St Peters Church of Uganda Bukalasa says they believe that the House of Bishops during their June 28th meeting did not take into consideration several factors before taking a decision to nullify the election of the 4th bishop of Luweero Diocese.

On Sunday, July 9, Archbishop Kaziimba assumed the pastoral responsibility of the Diocese of Luweero after the abdication ceremony by the retiring bishop Eridard Nsubuga.

In his address to the media while in Madi Diocese on July 9th, Archbishop Kaziimba cautioned politicians in Luweero against interfering and pronouncing themselves on Church processes.

At the beginning of this month, the Church of Uganda announced the nullification of the election of Rev. Canon Godfrey Kasana as the 4th Bishop of Luwero Diocese.

The decision was made during a meeting on June 28, 2023, at the Kabalega Resort Hotel in Hoima by the House of Bishops.

The Provincial Secretary of the Church, Rev. Canon William Ongeng, explained in a statement that the decision was made due to credible information that the Bishop-elect’s integrity was misrepresented during the nomination and election process, which invalidated the election.

“We regret the immediate impact this decision will have on Luwero Diocese as well as on the Bishop-elect and his family. We continue to pray for both, and assure you that the resolution of this matter is our highest priority,” Ongeng said.

The House of Bishops has ordered fresh nominations from the Diocesan Nominations Committee within a period of one month, ending on July 31, 2023.

The House of Bishops will receive fresh nominations for the next Bishop of Luwero and elect on August 1, 2023. The consecration and enthronement of the 4th Bishop of Luwero will be on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Luwero.
