Kampala: President Museveni who is also the Chairperson of the National Résistance Movement has summoned all NRM members of parliament for a caucus to discuss the process of choosing another speaker to replace the deceased Jacob Oulanyah who passed on Sunday last week in Seattle in the United States where he had been admitted since early last month.
According to the notice sent out to all l NRM legislators by the government Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwa, the caucus will sit on Thursday 24th March 2022 at Kololo ceremonial grounds on the orders of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and all the legislators have been advised to take Covid-19 tests prior to the Caucus.
The Government Chief Whip who initially interested himself in the Deputy Speakership but was convinced by president Museveni to leave the seat for Anita Among is suspected to be on the list to replace Jacob Oulanyah as the next Speaker of parliament.
Meanwhile, Anita Among herself who is the deputy speaker is also on the list and according to the latest sources, the First Deputy prime minister and also Minister of East Africa who is the former speaker of parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is expected to bounce back to occupy the seat and battle for the same seat.
Ever since he was elected as Speaker of Parliament in May last year, Oulanyah had hardly chaired any sittings due to ill health. His deputy Anita Among has steered most of the sittings.
Last year after a long absence from the House, he told MPs that he was back and feeling fine. He said he was disappointed by rumors about his death.
However, late last year, he fell sick again and was first admitted to Nakasero Hospital before he was later flown out of the country to the US for better treatment.
