Over 20 UPDF Soldiers Arrested For Extorting Cash From Civilians

Over 20 UPDF soldiers attached to the Fisheries Protection Unit have been arrested and charged with various offenses related to violations of their code of conduct while on duty.

This has been confirmed by the Fisheries Protection Unit commander, Lt. Col. Dick Kaija, saying the arrests came in response to complaints from members of the public and the fishing community who alleged that the soldiers were extorting money from them.

Kaija futher noted that a total of twenty-two officers have been charged in military courts and remanded to different prisons and added that there is an ongoing effort to remove undisciplined officers from the army to ensure it can fulfill its true purpose.

Some of the key issues previously raised by the locals in the fishing community include the impounding of motor vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and extortion by commanders while residents say some boats were being destroyed and the owners are not given a fair explanation about it among other issues handled by the unit.
