Nigeria Election 2023 Live Updates: Vote Counting Underway In Tight Presidential Race

By Uganda Online Media Correspondent

Vote counting is underway in Nigeria’s presidential and parliamentary elections seen as the most open since Africa’s most populous nation switched from military rule to democracy in 1999.

In Lagos State, vote sorting and counting has commenced at Ward 03, Unit 03, St Peters Primary School, Ikeja.

Also, counting has commenced in Ward 11, PU08, Challenge, Texaco, Ibadan south-west LGA, of Oyo state.

In Ward 4, Polling Unit 14, Aliu, Ibadan north, Oyo state, counting is reported to be completed and being collated.

Voters were seen waiting behind after casting their votes to witness the sorting and counting exercise across many polling units in the region.

However, some polling units are yet to begin counting as voting is still ongoing due to technical challenges with the BVAS devices.

The main contenders to succeed Muhammadu Buhari, who steps down as president in May, are former Lagos governor Bola Tinubu, 70, of the ruling All Progressives Congress, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, 76, of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, 61, of the smaller Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

All four voted in their home states, surrounded by chaotic scrums of reporters and supporters.
