Kampala: The NRM Central Executive Committee(CEC) has endorsed the deputy speaker Anita Among as the party flag bearer to stand for the position of Speaker of Parliament.
According to the deputy attorney general, Jackson Kafuuzi who was also among the NRM contenders, it was prudent to maintain the precedent that allows a deputy speaker to raise to the position of Speaker.
”While I did express interest in the position of Speaker of Parliament and subjected myself to party processes” Kafuuzi said in a statement.
”As a party member, am bound by this decision and I’ll follow it and support Hon Anita Among.
When the party secretariat opens up the option of deputy speakership, I’ll consult my colleagues and consider going for it.” he added
Over 13 legislators yesterday picked nomination forms to replace Jacob Oulanyah. including health minister Jane Ruth Aceng, Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi, State Minister for Defence also a member of parliament for West Budama Jacob Oboth Oboth before both Kafuuzi and Aceng withdrew from the race earlier today.
After thorough vetting and discussions, CEC zeroed to Bukedea Women representative Anita Among Annet who has been serving as Deputy Speaker under Jacob Oulanyah.
Anita will now face off with Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda from the opposition and those who may wish to stand as independents from the NRM.
The NRM caucus will sit tomorrow to seal CEC’s decision and voting of the new Speaker will take place on Friday 25th March 2022 at Kololo ceremonial grounds.
