Kampala: President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni and also the Chairman of the NRM and its Central Executive Committee (CEC) has revealed why the top organ endorsed Anita Among to carry the party flag for speaker race to replace the late Jacob Oulanyah.

Yesterday evening NRC CEC announced that among the 12 candidates who had expressed their interest, the party had Zeroed on Anita Among as their flag bearer for the race whose elections is slated for tomorrow Friday 25 March 2022.

According to the resolutions from NRM CEC which was convened at State House Entebbe, the committee vetted 11 of the 12 MPs who had expressed interest in the speakership.

Of the 13 legislators, Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng pulled out of the race early Wednesday morning.

Tororo District Woman MP Sarah Opendi did not interact with CEC because she did not turn up.

According to a resolution signed by Museveni and Todwong on behalf of CEC, the main reason for choosing Among was to uphold the culture and practice of promoting the deputy speaker to the speaker position.

“CEC, having noted that the NRM has established a culture and practice of elevating the Deputy Speaker to the position of Speaker even when there has not been any disruption and now, even more, when there is an emergency, HEREBY recommends to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus the RT HON AMONG ANITA ANNET for endorsement as NRM Candidate for the position of speaker of the 11th Parliament,” wrote Museveni.

But before the announcement was made, a section of NRM MPs from Northern Ugandan have rejected Among, insisting they want someone from their region to replace the late Oulanyah.

After Among’s endorsement, Mr. Museveni reportedly told the other nominees that CEC chose one candidate to avoid a showdown in the Parliamentary Caucus in order to preserve unity and avoid further divisions in the House.

The President also gave a go-ahead for the 11 MPs who had expressed interest in the position of Speaker to shift and battle for the deputy speaker. The Deputy Speaker slot is expected to fall vacant on Friday when Ms. Among resigns and the Deputy Speaker will be elected after the burial of Oulanyah.

The position of Speaker fell vacant last week after the death of Oulanyah in Seattle in the United States where he had been admitted for some time shortly after he assumed the office.
