Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) has released the results of the Primary Leaving Exams(PLE) for the year 2022.
According to UNEB, Candidates who sat for the year 2022 have registered better performance compared to their colleagues who sat for the 2020 examinations.
Releasing the results at State House in Nakasero, the Executive director of Uganda National Examination Board, Daniel Odongo said a total of 811,810 students sat for the examinations out of the 832,654 who were registered.
Of these, 114,617 passed in first grade, 357,799 passed in grade two,146,583 in third grade, and 95,702 passed in fourth grade. According to UNEB statistics, 97,109 candidates were not graded.
A total of 714,702 out of 811,810 students who sat for the examinations have passed and can proceed to post-primary education according to Odongo.
According to UNEB, parents and students can access via sms to 6600 and each sms request via short code 6600 will cost Sh500.
Meanwhile, the released results also indicated that at least 97000 pupils failed the exams and will have to repeat the class.
“The 97,109 represented 12% of the total number of candidates who sat for the examinations in 2022. Such candidates should not be admitted to Senior One but should repeat as they will not be eligible to register for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examination later,” UNEB Executive Director, Dan. Odongo said.
This number is higher than the 74,878 who failed PLE exams the previous year in 2021.
Odongo further revealed that candidates whose results were withheld over malpractice noting that in accordance with Section 5(2)(b) of the UNEB Act, 2021, the board will withhold the results of the affected candidates pending completion of investigations.
“Scouts and examiners reported a number of cases of suspected external assistance rendered to candidates by third parties inside the examination rooms and smuggling of information relevant to the examination by some of the candidates. Security also arrested some distributors and teachers who had cut open question paper envelopes ahead of time in order to access question papers in the districts of Mukono, Gomba, Mpigi and the greater Masaka areas,” Odongo added.
“All candidates whose results have been withheld will be accorded a fair hearing by the board’s examinations security committee. After the hearings are concluded the board will publish, in the media, the list of schools and districts from which results will have been cancelled.”
PLE was conducted on November 8th and 9th, 2022, with a total of 832,810 candidates registered from 14,153 examination centres. 51.9 per cent of the total registered candidates were females and 48.1 per cent were males. 583,769 were funded under the Universal Primary Education-UPE program, and 249,041 were non-UPE candidates.
