Kampala: The President Of Rwanda Paul Kagame has permitted the full reopening of three land borders with neighboring countries including Uganda, Burundi, and Tanzania.

“Land borders shall re-open, starting Monday, March 7, 2022, “People may be subject to random COVID-19 testing by the Ministry of Health upon entry,” reads a communique of the Rwandan Cabinet which sat on Friday.
According to reports, the Gatuna border in the Gicumbi district between Rwanda and Uganda will be reopened for travelers.

This has also been confirmed by first son and Uganda Land Forces Commander, Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba in a tweet saying by Monday 7 March 2022, people will be allowed to move across the two countries.

”As of Monday 7th March my uncle, His Excellency President Kagame has permitted greater movement of people across our borders! I thank him very much for re-uniting our people. I also thank him for being a great hero!” Muhoozi tweeted.

Kigali recently announced the reopening of the Gatuna border but cross-border movements of people remained restricted with only cargo truck drivers allowed to cross.

The border point has been closed for three years with Rwanda blocking its citizens from crossing to Uganda due to poor bilateral relations.

However, the relations between the two countries have since improved following a meeting between Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and President Paul Kagame.

Rwanda’s frontier with eastern Tanzania had been closed, as per the Covid-19 East African protocols.
while Rwanda’s Southern border with Burundi had been closed for almost seven years after the sister nations’ relations became icy in 2015.
