Kampala: Following the arrest of Dr. Byarugaba Baterana over the 28.8 billion scandals at Mulago Hospital, the Ministry of Health’s permanent secretary Dr. Diana Atwine has interdicted him from the position of Executive Director, Mulago Hospital and directed him to immediately hand over Office to his deputy, Dr. Rosemary Byanyima.

Baterana was on Tuesday arrested together with six other officials from Mulago by the State House Health Monitoring Unit for the ongoing investigation into shs28.8 billion which allegedly disappeared in thin air and unaccounted for at Mulago national referral hospital

In a letter dated March 2, 2022, Dr.Atwine informed Baterana that owing to the ongoing investigations into abuse of office, embezzlement, causing financial loss, and fraudulent false accounting, it is prudent he steps aside to pave way for investigations.

“Pursuant to section F-s and F-r of the Public Service Standing Orders 2021, you are hereby interdicted for duty to pave way for investigations and you will receive half pay with immediate effect until the charges against you have been cleared,” Dr.Atwine said in the letter.

Dr.Baterana was been asked to hand over the office to his deputy, Dr.Rosemary Byanyima but also to keep away from Mulago hospital until advised otherwise and also barred from leaving the country.

” You are therefore required to hand over your work and office to the deputy director, Dr. Rosemary Byanyima in accordance with section f-d(4) of the public service standing orders and keep away from your duty station until you are advised otherwise. During the period of interdiction, you shall not leave the country without my written permission,” Atwine added in her letter.

But Here Are some of the things you may not have known about Rosemary Byanyima

Byanyima was born in Ibanda district to Joseph Byanyima and Constance Byanyima (RIP).

She attended Immaculate Heart Nyakibale Secondary School for O level and Trinity College Nabbingo for A’ level.

In 1991, Byanyima graduated from Makerere University with a first degree in Medicine. She also has a master’s degree in Radiology.

She has an Executive master’s degree in business administration from Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI).

Byanyima had also served as the Mulago hospital clinical head of the diagnostics for nine years between 2009 and 2018.

She was also head of the radiology department at the same facility from 2008 to 2009.

As a consultant radiologist, Byanyima, replaced Dr. Doreen Birabwa-Male who retired in November 2019.

As a deputy executive director, Byanyimahas been in charge of the clinical works of the hospital; responsible to make sure theaters are working, drugs are available, patients are getting the care they deserve among others, and involved in patient care as her biggest task.

Byanyima has also been heading all senior consultants at Mulago on top of executing the duties of the executive director.

During her acting capacity, Byanyima is credited for leading a great team at Mulago that was at the forefront of the fighting against coronavirus.

Bynayima has been a health worker for 29 years, with 27 spent at Mulago Hospital.

Byanyima is also a family woman blessed with two children; a son who is also a medical doctor and a daughter who is in her final her studying civil engineering.
