Kampala: Over 90 suspects are in custody for terrorizing motorists along the Kampala Northern bypass, the police say.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, the arrests followed intense operations on the Northern Bypass with the aim of clamping down on thugs, criminals who have shifted to villages near the Northern Bypass.
This was done by the Joint task teams of the police and UPDF on Tuesday (01.02.2022) who carried out an intelligence-led operation in areas of Gaza, which is located in Mabito.
According to police, the village is a known hiding place for suspected criminals terrorizing Nateete, Busega, and Kampala areas.
Owoyesigyire, the suspects have been engaging in crimes like phone theft during rush hours, burglary, and aggravated robbery and so far 90 suspects were arrested and are currently detained at Nateete Police Station.
“Many of their victims have been stabbed and assaulted before being robbed of their property,” Owoyesgyire said.
Owoyesigyire noted that exhibits including knives and suspected stolen phones among others were recovered in the operation.
“The suspects will be arraigned in courts of law as soon as investigations are complete,” Owoyesigyire added.
