Kampala: The Central Executive Committee (CEC) for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has endorsed the government chief whip Thomas Tayebwa to contest for the position of deputy speaker of parliament.

According to the parliamentary caucus meeting that took place today, at the Kololo independence grounds, Tayebwa went through unopposed after his contenders pulled out of the race.

“Thank you colleagues for endorsing me unopposed for Deputy Speaker on NRM ticket,” Tayebwa announced.

Tayebwa will now battle with Kioga County and National Unity Platform’s Okot P’Bitek Moses who has been fronted by the opposition members in parliament.

Meanwhile, the opposition has also endorsed JEEMA president Asuman Basaalirwa to compete to face off against NRM’s Anita Among for the speakership whose elections are slated for tomorrow Friday 25 March 2022 to replace late Jacob Oulanyah who passed on last week in Seattle In the US where he had been admitted battling a terminal illness.
