National Planning Authority Projects Increase In Covid-19 Cases Ahead Of Planned Full Reopening Of The Economy

Kampala: The National Planning Authority (NPA) has projected an increase in COVID-19 infections as the country prepares for the full reopening of the economy and education institutions in January 2022.
According to records from the ministry of health, Uganda is currently registering an increase in Covid-19 cases with experts saying it is being driven by the new Omicron variant.
In a weekly COVID-19 projection released on Monday, NPA projected an increase in new cases for the week of December 26 2021, and January 1, 2022.
“The model is projecting an increase in new cases for the week of 26th December to 1st January 2022 with an average of 568 new cases per day and a weekly total of 3,975,” the NPA said in a statement.
“For the week of 2nd to 8th January 2022, a daily average of 604 new cases and a weekly total of 4,230 is projected,” it added.
On the African continental scene, the majority of countries have recorded an increasing number of new cases with South Africa on top of the list with the highest number of cases on the continent (recording 115,328 for the week ending 25th December), followed by Zimbabwe, with neighbors Kenya coming in the third position.

According to NPA, Uganda is now in the 17th position on the continent.
Internationally, the USA still tops the list of countries with the highest number of COVID cases with 1,293,612 cases reported over the week ending December 25, 2021.
France, Italy, Spain, Czechia, Switzerland, Denmark, India and South Korea, are among the countries that experienced an increase in cases over the past week.
