Museveni Appoints Maj. James Birungi To Replace Abel Kandiho As CMI Boss

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Maj Tom Magambo who has been in the Internal Security Organisations(ISO) as the new police Criminal Investigations Director.

“President Museveni has promoted Private Tom Magambo to the rank of Major and appointed him Director Criminal Investigations of the Uganda Police Force,” the acting UPDF spokesperson, Lt Col Ronald Kakurungu said in a statement.

Kampala: President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Maj. James Burungi to replace Maj. General Abel Kandiho as the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) boss.


Gen Kandiho has also been accused in various reports of human rights abuses and last year, he was targeted with economic sanctions by the United States Government.


The News of Birungi’s appointment was confirmed by Gen Muhoozi congratulating him for the new position.

“I congratulate both Maj. General Abel Kandiho and Maj.General James Birungi on their new appointments. Hongera Sana.” he said.

Maj Gen Birungi, the New CMI boss has been  serving on a special assignment “to monitor on behalf of the guarantors of the peace process, the assembling, screening, demobilization, and integration of the armed forces of South Sudan”


He has previously served as Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC) and also as chief of air force staff of Uganda Air Force.
