Kampala: The Ministry of Education and Sports has cleared all learners in semi-candidate classes who have the capability to sit for the forthcoming 2022 national examinations to be allowed to register.

According to the minister of education, Janet Kataha Museveni, this only applies to semi-candidates in Primary six who can sit for the Primary leaving examination (PLE) and senior three students who can sit for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE).

This has also been confirmed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry for Education, Dr Denis Mugimba saying the government has done this to avoid the extra cost that might be brought by an increase in the number of candidates.

Mugimba noted that the students who were in Senior two in 2020 when the government first imposed the first lockdown in March are now supposed to be in senior 4 if the government did not impose a second lockdown in 2021.

This means that these students should be sitting for their UCE this year. However, due to the lockdown, these learners are still in senior three thus cleared to sit for UCE if they have the capacity to pass the national exams.

Meanwhile, the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) said that they are always ready to take on to all candidates who will be registered by schools.

Last week UNEB revealed that this year’s exams for Primary and Secondary schools will be conducted in October, November, and December as it was before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last year, exams were held from March to mid-year due to the lock-down that affected the 2020 academic year.

It had been expected that exams would again be held in May, as many candidates had been studying online since May last year, however, UNEB announced at the resumption of school this year that it would go back to the old schedule of exams.
