Makerere University Students Arrested For Protesting Against Online Lessons

By Uganda Online Media

Kampala: Makerere University Students have today Monday 7, 2022 stormed the university streets protesting online lessons saying the university has no excuse to carry on with online lessons since the economy has been fully reopened.

The Police has thus cordoned off and arrested the furious students who had painted the university with red gowns to show their dissatisfaction

The move follows the university VC Prof Nawangwe’s statement yesterday through his social media to detest the leadership of Shamim Nambassa and her team whom he accuses of misguiding their fellow students.

Professor Nawangwe in a tweet accused Makerere’s 87th guild president Shamim Nambassa of mobilizing students to return to campus for physical lectures.

“We have noted misleading messages originating from @MakGuild leadership regarding the opening of the university. All students and stakeholders are advised that the first semester will open in a staggered manner and using blended methods of teaching and learning,” part of the tweet reads.

VC Nawangwe also shared the academic calendar for the year 2021/2022 which he says must be followed to the dot.

VC Nawangwe’s hard-hitting tweet comes only hours after Shamim Nambassa’s Facebook live session in which she accused Professor Nawangwe of mismanaging university affairs and called upon the rest of the country to join her in what she termed as ‘a war’ with the university’s caretaker.

According to the calendar, Makerere university will follow a blended system of teaching with priority being given to freshers who will begin their university classes physically while the rest study online.

The students argue that the university should be fully reopened for all students since the economy was. Students accuse management of taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to ‘extort’ the learners.
