Kampala: Police at parliament have arrested Mityana District Woman MP Hon Joyce Bagala.
The MP was reportedly arrested on Tuesday by Parliamentary Police for being in possession of T-shirts with printed messages denouncing torture.
This has been confirmed by MP John Baptist Nambeshe of Manjiya County.
“It is very unfortunate that the shadow minister for Information and Anti-Corruption also Mityana District woman Mp (Joyce Bagala) has been arrested in the precincts of parliament by the parliamentary police for being in possession of T-shirts written on #EndTortureInUganda,” Nambeshe said in a Tweet.
Hon Bagala and other opposition MPs had gathered for a press conference in which they announced plans to file a motion of censure against Security Minister Gen Jim Muhwezi who is expected to present a report on torture in the country to the floor of parliament.
The MPs also announced that they would put in place a “Public Complaints Register” book and phone numbers where all victims of torture can report throughout the country.
