Don’t Subject Leaners To ‘Useless’ Exams: Ministry Of Education Bans External Mock, Midterm Exams For Candidates

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Maj Tom Magambo who has been in the Internal Security Organisations(ISO) as the new police Criminal Investigations Director.
“President Museveni has promoted Private Tom Magambo to the rank of Major and appointed him Director Criminal Investigations of the Uganda Police Force,” the acting UPDF spokesperson, Lt Col Ronald Kakurungu said in a statement.
Kampala: The Ministry of Education and Sports has banned external mocks and other examinations organized for students in candidate classes in secondary and primary schools.
The ministry further banned the beginning of term and mid-term examinations noting that schools should now focus on helping their students to recover the two years of closure due to the covid19 pandemic.
According to the Ministry of Education, students should only be subjected to final examinations conducted by the Uganda National Examination board.
This has been confirmed by the Ministry of Education spokesperson, Denis Mugimba saying schools should focus on spending more time teaching and engaging students instead of subjecting them to exams.
In April last year, the Minister of Education, Janet Museveni banned schools from giving candidates several mock examinations as it was normal practice.
Janet Museveni noted that the ban of extra sets of mocks is to ensure that the syllabus recovery term is not misused adding that all learners will sit for one set of final exams.
According to Martin Okiria, the national chairperson of secondary schools’ head teachers’ association, mocks are a benchmarking tool that helps a teacher to improve on their weak points based on the performance of their learners in these exams.
Before the closure of schools in 2020, a statement provided by Ndugwa Badru of WAKISSHA which is a joint body for schools in Wakiso providing joint mock examinations showed that the UCE Mock Examinations package cost 400,000 Shillings, UACE (Arts) and Sciences 300,000 Shillings.
