President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Maj Tom Magambo who has been in the Internal Security Organisations(ISO) as the new police Criminal Investigations Director.

“President Museveni has promoted Private Tom Magambo to the rank of Major and appointed him Director Criminal Investigations of the Uganda Police Force,” the acting UPDF spokesperson, Lt Col Ronald Kakurungu said in a statement.

Kampala: The government through the Ministry of Security has banned hawkers from moving around villages saying they are a source of insecurity in Uganda.

In an urgent letter sent out to Resident District/City Commissioners, District Police Commanders, and District Internal Security Officers, the Minister for Security Gen Jim Muhwezi said they have received information that there are criminals moving around villages especially in the Western region, masquerading/pretending to be hawkers or traders.

Statement From Ministry Of Security

“This practice of moving in villages selling items should not be allowed as its a source of insecurity. Those who want to do trade should do so in trading centers,” Muhwezi said in the letter.

It’s worth noting that the government through Kampala Capital City Authority(KCCA) resolved to kick out street vendors and hawkers from Kampala effective January 2022 and as a result, it is suspected that some hawkers have since resorted to shifting their businesses to the villages.

The Kampala Resident City Commissioner Hudu Hussein at the beginning of this month noted that from January 10th, 2022, KCCA will not permit street vending and hawking on the streets of Uganda’s capital Kampala

“All vendors and street hawkers should make arrangements to find markets where they will operate from. Starting next year, KCCA (Kampala Capital City Authority) will not permit street vending and hawking. The City needs an upgrade,” Hussein said.

He further noted that all hawkers should secure stalls in available markets in and around the city center in a move that is meant to upgrade and redeem Kampala’s image both locally and abroad
