Kampala: Bilal Islamic School Bwaise has sent all students in senior one and two classes back home following a fire-out break that gutted some of the school structures leaving hundreds of students with nowhere to sleep.

According to the school management, students in senior one and two were the most affected with their dormitories reduced to ashes in yesterday’s fire.

Although the school had earlier communicated to parents that only male students in senior one and two would go home, parents with girls in the same classes have also been advised to take their children back home.

According to the latest reports from the school, police officers manning the school gate are guiding the parents to the compound where a member of staff with a microphone, announces the name of a student or students whose parent has arrived as they are not allowed to tour any part of the destroyed structures.

Kawempe Division mayor, Emmanuel Sserunjoji who has since visited the affected dormitories of the school noted that the students’ property in both dormitories was all burnt to ashes adding that the affected dormitories structurally look weak and the school is likely to incur a big cost to put up a new structure.

Sserunjoji further noted that the leadership at the division shall make recommendations that all schools with boarding schools have cameras and their electrical wiring system be checked annually to ensure its integrity.

According to the school management, day scholars have been asked to stay home until Wednesday while those in senior one and two have been asked to come back next week.

Although the cause of the fire is yet to be established, Kampala lord mayor Erias Lukwago says the fires in schools seem deliberate, saying police has informed him that before the fire, there was an explosion that might have been planted by arsonists.
