 Kampala: Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament Anita Annet Among has won the speakership elections held at Kololo independence grounds this afternoon with 401 votes against opposition candidate Jeema party president Hon.Asuman Basalirwa’s 66 votes.

The next election will be now for deputy speaker, an office Among abandoned for speakership job. This election will see NRM’s Hon. Thomas Tayebwa battling opposition candidate Kyoga County North MP Okot Bitek for deputy speakership job.

This comes days after the death of speaker Jacob Oulanyah who passed on March 20th in Seattle, the US where he was being treated at.

The late Speaker was elected to that position on May 24, 2021, after defeating the former Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.

He had also served as Deputy Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, from May 2011 until May 2022.

Oulanyah was also a member of parliament representing the Omoro County Constituency, Omoro District, Acholi sub-region, in Uganda’s Northern Region.
